Here are some frequently asked questions about kennel cough in dogs:

  • What are the symptoms?
    The most common symptom is a honking cough, but other symptoms include gagging, sneezing, and discharge from the eyes or nose.  
  • How long does it last?
    Kennel cough usually resolves on its own within 10 to 14 days, but it can take up to 6 weeks in older dogs.  
  • How is it treated?
    Kennel cough is treated with supportive care and cough suppressants, but some dogs require antibiotics.  
  • Is it contagious?
    Yes, kennel cough is highly contagious and spreads quickly in places where pets are in close contact. 
  • How can I prevent kennel cough?
    Vaccines can reduce the risk of your pet falling ill and can reduce the severity of an infection. 
  • When should I see a veterinarian?
    You should contact your vet if your dog has breathing difficulties, is not eating normally, is elderly or immunosuppressed, or doesn’t improve within the expected amount of time.  
  • Kennel cough is a respiratory disease that is caused by bacteria and viruses that attack the lining of the dog’s respiratory tract. It’s also known as Canine Infectious Tracheobronchitis (CIRD).
